From a federal laboratory to a Wyoming pilot, in order.

  1. 2017

DOE-funded catalytic graphitization research begins at NETL.

The Department of Energy funds work at the National Energy Technology Laboratory that takes catalytic graphitization from concept to a validated process, documented in multiple NETL publications.

  2. 2024

    US Carbon is founded.

Founded to answer the broken graphite supply chain. Three alternative graphitization routes were evaluated before the company settled on NETL’s.

  3. Jan 2025

Graphitization R&D lab opens at the Wyoming Innovation Center.

A permitted site, not a plan for one.

US Carbon leases space at the Wyoming Innovation Center in Gillette. The things that usually delay a scale-up are already settled.

Air quality permit
In place, supporting scale-up to a kiloton a year on site.
Utilities and facilities
Already sized for the scale-up, so there is no greenfield wait.
Feedstock
Powder River Basin coal from Campbell County, close to the site.
Equipment
Conventional, commercially available industrial equipment.

Who we build with.

A federal laboratory and the site operator: the technology and the ground.

  • National Energy Technology Laboratory

    Technology provider and research collaborator

DOE laboratory where catalytic graphitization was developed. US Carbon licenses the technology and works with NETL under a three-year CRADA.

  • Energy Capital Economic Development

    Facility provider

Owner and operator of the Wyoming Innovation Center, where our project is already permitted and sited.
